Koh Samui is the largest island in the gulf of Thailand and the
third largest in Thailand. It began as an island growing coconuts and the
stately coconut palm is still in abundance. The island has beautiful sandy beaches,
warm sea and great natural beauty, especially if you leave the main road and
head inland to more rural areas. You can also get to other islands easily from Samui. There are ferries and quick catamarans to Koh Pangan, Koh Tao etc.
Getting here is easy. Fly from anywhere in the world (see
Opodo) to
Bangkok and take a domestic flight, ferry, train or bus to Koh Samui. (ferry
info. on links page)
By air from Bangkok, Singapore and Hong
Kong. See
www.bangkokair.com and
www.thaiair.com By car ferry from the mainland at Suratthani and Donsak. By train and
ferry or coach and ferry from Bangkok.
Visas are not required by most European and USA passport
holders
entering Thailand for a holiday of 30 days or
less. You can check visa requirements
at
www.th4u.com/visaframe.htm
Currency is the Thai baht. There are plenty of cash machines on Samui. Travellers cheques
are easily changed at the local Banks. A better rate of exchange is given for travellers cheques
rather than cash. There is a currency convertor on
XE.com Personal Currency Assistant
Getting around is also easy. Car hire and bike hire are
inexpensive. There's also songthaew (bus), taxi or pedal power.
Sightseeing is best if you hire a motor bike, a car or even a
car and driver for the day. Take one of the many
free maps and cruise at your own speed. There are temples, tourist attractions
and many things of interest including beautiful waterfalls. You can hire a local
boat to take you on a trip to the small islands off Samui or take the organised
boat trip to Ang Thong national marine park.
Nightlife in abundance in the Chaweng and Lamai area. If you
want a more peaceful holiday head away from these to the quieter areas,
especially the west coast.
Things to do for people who like to be on the go. Rock
climbing, elephant trekking, golf, cycling, kayaking, snorkeling, diving, tree
canopy gliding, cookery classes, the list is almost endless.
Spas are in abundance and world class for beauty treatments,
massage, healing etc.
Shopping has always been fun on Samui. Clothing, jewellery,
silks, handcrafts, and inexpensive souvenirs can all be bartered for.
Weather is generally high humidity and warm. Late December to the end of March is usually warm
and sunny with little rain. April to June can be very hot, above 30°C. July to October is warm and sunny
with occasional showers. Mid
October to late December has the highest rainfall but still warm, some people
love the rainy season.
